What are the risks of going number two with hemorrhoids?

I got a protruding hemorrhoid yesterday evening and it is still with me. I’m avoiding going number two because of the pain. What is the worst that can happen if I got number two? Can it tear open? Please reassure me! I just need to have it in my head that nothing bad can happen no matter how bad it hurts.
